Summer projects update provided to U-46 board

By Seth Hancock
The Board of Education in School District U-46 was updated on projects that took place over the summer at its meeting on Monday, Sept. 14 which was held virtually due to COVID-19 regulations.
Mechanical upgrades, from chiller replacements to electrical service main work, were highlighted from 11 schools. Parking lot work, resurfacing to repairs, was done at eight sites.
Work was done for the pathways program at Larkin High School in Elgin and the BEACON Academy at South Elgin High School. Streamwood High School got a new tennis court and work done in its auxiliary gym, and Elgin High School’s Memorial Field was redone with synthetic turf.
Custodial flooring, maintenance and other projects were highlighted from across the district.
“This last year, we were able to complete over $50 million of planned capital, custodial and maintenance projects that will greatly benefit our communities, our students and staff,” said Sheila Downs, director of plant operations. “And we were able to get a lot more work done. We did over 112 individual projects spanning over 50 different sites.”
The district received over $105,000 in energy rebates via LED lights and insolation projects according to Downs, and U-46 expect around $180,000 through a Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) program.
“(ComEd) want(s) to make sure that if they ever had high stress on the electrical grid that we would be able to shut down to take off some of the burden off of the electrical grid,” Downs said as the district will run two tests, one over the summer and another this winter. She said the “school district gets incentives for participating and being able to hit our threshold. I’m excited to say that we hit 100 percent of our target at all the locations that participate, which right now are currently all of our secondaries.”
