U-46 resolutions loom for mobil classrooms, IHSA

  The Board of Education in School District U-46 is set to vote on a pair of annual items at its upcoming meeting on Monday, June 7. The resolutions were presented on May 17.  
  Included is a resolution declaring the need to continue using temporary classrooms, known as mobiles.  
  The resolution states that “all options to address availability of space in permanent buildings have been considered in light of these enrollment changes and the programmatic needs of students,” and “it is necessary to utilize temporary classrooms at certain schools in the District in order to address the changes in student enrollments and educational program needs.”  
  The district expects to have 13 total mobile units, eight doubles and five singles, which will house 21 classrooms. The mobile inspection reports showed that some of the units have been in use for up to 23 years.  
  Board member Dawn Martin asked about how COVID-19 regulations have impacted the need for mobiles.  
  “I don’t see us significantly decreasing,” said Jeff King, deputy superintendent of operations. “I can tell you, there are some we could remove now. There’s some people who would probably disagree with me, but I think some of them frankly need to go because they’re old and realistically they’re probably past their lifespan.”  
  King said he thinks four to five of the units could be removed. He also said 12 mobiles are likely to be rented next year for Streamwood High School which is expected to undergo renovations for its academy.  
  Also set for a vote is renewal of the district’s membership in the Illinois High School Association, which governs high school sports and some activities.
