Calendars for two years approved by U-46 board

The Board of Education in School District U-46 unanimously approved, via a 7-0 vote, the calendars for the next two school years at its meeting on Monday, March 7.
The first day of school will be Tuesday, Aug. 16 (Aug. 23 for preschool) in 2022-2023 with the last day of school being Wednesday, May 31 or Wednesday, June 7 if all five emergency days are used. For the 2023-2024 school year, the first day is set for Tuesday, Aug. 15 (Aug. 22 preschool) and the last day Tuesday, May 28 or Tuesday, June 4 if emergency days are used.
Total instructional days each year is 176, and teacher attendance is 184.
Superintendent Tony Sanders said the district plans to bring the 2024-2025 school year calendar next year to keep a year ahead.
“We’ll just get in the habit of having one year, but we’ll always be a year ahead of everybody,” Sanders said. “Parents and teachers and everybody can plan accordingly.”
High school graduations will be Saturday, May 27, 2023 and Saturday, May 25, 2024.
For 2022-2023, students will have election days off on Tuesday, Nov. 8 and Tuesday, April 4. Thanksgiving break will begin Wednesday, Nov. 23 (return on Monday, Nov. 28), Christmas break on Friday, Dec. 22 (return Monday, Jan. 9) and spring break on Monday, March 27 (return Monday, April 3).
Other holidays include Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 5), Columbus Day/Indigenous People’s Day (Monday, Oct. 10), MLK Day (Monday, Jan. 16) President’s Day (Monday, Feb. 20) Good Friday (April 7) and Memorial Day (Monday, May 29). Four Fridays (Oct. 21, Jan. 27, March 3, May 5) will be non-attendance/institute days.
For 2023-2024, Election Day on Tuesday, March 19 will be off. Thanksgiving break begins Wednesday, Nov. 22 (return Monday, Nov. 27), Christmas break Friday, Dec. 22 (return Monday, Jan. 8) and spring break Monday, March 25 with a return on Tuesday, April 2 after having Easter Monday off.
