ISBE report presented to U-46 Board of Education

By Seth Hancock
On average, School District U-46 employees made $101,459 in salaries and benefits and took 12.3 sick days in Fiscal Year 2022, according to the salaries and benefits report generated by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
The 52-page report was presented to the Board of Education at its meeting on Monday, Aug. 22.
“Pursuant to state law, annually we must present this report to the board essentially outlining all the administrator and teacher salaries and benefits that are provided, on or before Oct. 1 of each year,” said Superintendent Tony Sanders.“These are uploaded into the state system, it gets kicked back to us and then we put it on the board book for your knowledge. There’s no need to vote on this.”
The salaries and benefits in the report represents about 57 percent of the $445.7 million budgeted for salaries and benefits in FY2022. Certain staff and certain income expenditures, like stipends, are excluded from the report.
In previous years, it was suggested a disclaimer be added to the U-46 report that it is “misleading” by a former board member, Phil Costello, who said “there are significant disclosure limitations since the report only provides 60 percent of total compensation. Most employees on the list have multiple sources of U-46 compensation beyond the amount listed.”
The salaries listed in the report totaled $198.6 million and $255.4 million with benefits included: other benefits ($33.9 million), retirement enhancements ($19.4 million), bonuses ($2.3 million) and annuities ($1.2 million).
There were 2,517 full-time employees included in the report who took 30,906 sick days, for the 12.3 average, and 2,000 vacation days. The district’s teachers’ contract allows for 12 sick days per year.
