The Examiner U-46 News FeedThe Heart of the Matter - 10/30

Next week we’ll finish up the most consequential presidential election in our lifetime. Whether you’ve already cast your ballot are have yet to do so, what follows is what I’m hoping and praying for. It’s not about my candidate – if you read the Cheap Seats regularly you know who that is – it’s rather about how the wisdom of the electorate manifests itself. And while these principles surely apply to any election, they really need to apply more than ever to this one.
I hope people choose to vote primarily for something, not for someone and most especially not against someone.
I hope people consciously choose to reject hysteria when they vote and remain aware that tapping into the roots of voter fear is the primary objective of most of the legacy media and the public relations professionals who manage messaging in both parties.
As a personal aside, I fervently hope that my mother-in-law, who is a wonderful, loving woman, comes to realize that “60 Minutes” is not about journalism, it’s about delivering Hollywood-style propaganda masquerading as journalism.
I hope that voters understand that, even though we have our imperfections, America has been and continues to be an overwhelming force for good in the world.
I hope that voters reject the idea that faith and science are, or should be, disconnected. The vast majority of the greatest and most ground-breaking scientific discoveries throughout history can be traced to scientists who valued faith and institutions of higher learning whose roots are overwhelmingly faith-based.
I hope that voters take to heart the words that Jefferson so eloquently penned almost 250 years ago: That some truths are indeed self-evident.
It is, for example, a self-evident truth that one plus one equals two. That is a truth that cannot be altered without altering the nature of creation. It may be possible for the Creator to create an universe where one plus one equals three, but that could not be possible by the universe we inhabit. If one plus one can equal any value but two, our world collapses. Computers can’t work, automobiles are useless, buildings collapse en masse, etc. The world relies upon the foundation that self-evident truths provide.
Up until a few years ago, it was a self-evident truth that anyone born with XY chromosomes, testicles and a penis was a man. It was another self-evident truth that anyone born with XX chromosomes, a vagina and a uterus was a woman.
We now find ourselves living in a time when a great number of supposed academics insist that such truths are not only not self-evident, they are not any sort of truths at all. On the face of it, that diversion from reality at our institutions of “higher learning” would be amusing, but for the fact that so many people seeking elected office and engaged in public service are determined to support this particular fantasy.
I do not give a crap about the way a person chooses to present himself or herself to society. I do not give a crap about pronouns. Nor do I give a crap about the academic fantasy-land of “micro-aggressions” and “triggering” behavior. Pretending that any of these things matter is childish and dumbs down our society to an infinite degree.
While no candidate for public office is perfect, I hope that voters will choose candidates who recognize reality as much as possible. These times are far too dangerous to indulge fantasy.
