The Examiner U-46 News FeedU-46 approves Loera as new student advisor By Seth Hancock
Streamwood High School junior Eric Loera will be the eighth student advisor to the Board of Education in School District U-46, as his nomination was unanimously approved by the board on Monday, April 25.
Loera was chosen as the advisor, Larkin junior Daniel Strom as alternate, by U-46 CEO Tony Sanders’ Student Advisory Council and representatives of that council presented the nomination. Loera will replace Larkin senior Allison Holloway whose term is ending.
Donna Smith, the board’s president, has been on the board since the inception of the student advisory position.
“It’s been the same thing every year with the students choosing who they want as a representative on the board, and you have always chosen excellent candidates,” Smith said. “I’m sure that it is very hard for you because I’m sure everybody who applies for it would be an excellent candidate.”
Board member Phil Costello thanked the advisory council and reiterated a message he’s had consistently through his first year on the board, which is he wants to hear more from students.
“I applaud your efforts,” Costello said. “I think this is a great process, and I would also like [the student advisory council] and [Loera] to find out new ways that we can hear from you on a broader scale of items at any school and all schools.”
Costello said he wants to “listen to and learn” from the students and not just tell them “what they’re supposed to learn.”
The process for being chosen as the student advisor requires an essay from the candidate as well as a letter of recommendation, which Loera received from Streamwood’s Principal Ariel Correa.
Correa listed several of Loera’s activities and accomplishments such as holding a 4.4 GPA and being an AP and honor roll student, making Streamwood’s Academic Scholar list in the fall of 2015 and being a part of Streamwood’s National Honor Society. Loera volunteers at his school and is the co-chair of the Principal’s Advisory Council, and he is the vice chair of the Hanover Township Committee on Youth.
“I have known Eric for the past five months and have been quickly impressed by his unconditional efforts to help his community, our school and the public in general,” Correa wrote.
In his essay, Loera concluded: “I am excited about the opportunity to serve the board in an advisory capacity. I attended the last two board meetings and I realize that there are some serious decisions that have to be made. But I also realize that there are two sides to every issue and all the information and feedback has to be considered before a responsible decision can be made. As a ‘voice’ for the students, I would like to be a part of this process.”
