By Seth Hancock
The Board of Education in School District U-46 honored the top two percent of high school seniors at a special board meeting on Monday, May 9.
From the three schools in The Examiner’s circulation, there were 35 students honored.
Ariel Correa, principal at Streamwood High School, announced his school’s recipients and said they were dedicated students to not only academics but also extracurricular activities likes sports and clubs.
“I am so very proud of all of my students, not just Streamwood High School Sabres but all of you guys who are top two percent,” said Correa. “You guys have learned to balance in a short period of time, four years in high school, more than just academics career.”
Streamwood’s top two percent include Mahhum Ahmed, Jacqueline Delara Jimenez, Jeremy Gumila, Ajla Hadzisalihovic, Theofilos Lolis, Sharai Orozco, Mira Patel Melissa Perez and Guadalupe Vega.
James Edwards, South Elgin’s principal, said he “had the opportunity to sit with each one of my top two percent students at South Elgin” and knows the dedication of both the students and parents to achieve the status.
South Elgin’s top two percent include Mina Brandon, Zachary Codiamat, Hannah Gordon, Alexandra Hayden-Clark, Timothy Hess, Corinne Hildebrandt, Jori Johnson, Bailey Mcclure, Sophia Paliganoff, Alexia Poulos, Nathan Reeser, Matthew Szymulewski and Dianne Verroya.
Bartlett’s top two percent include Brittany Amawan, Kyle Calvert, Karly Cazzato, Austin Hilvert, Justin Isla, Lucas Isla, Hannah Kolano, Kyle Kucharski, Jennifer Kummerer, Nicole MacLennan, Lindsey Petritis, Marissa Rubino and Julia Santos.
Those 13 students no doubt also helped Bartlett High School gain silver medal status for the second straight year in U.S. News & World Report’s list of Best High Schools.
“We are honored to be included in the 2016 U.S. News and World Report list,” said Bartlett’s Principal Richard Lebrón in a U-46 press release. “This recognition reflects the BHS mission of staff, students and families working together to ensure our academic success.”
Bartlett was ranked 81st in Illinois and 1,974th in the country among 6,218 schools recognized on the list. The rankings are based off of Prairie State Achievement Exam results (66 percent met or exceeded standards in reading and 63 percent in math), graduation rate (87 percent) and Advanced Placement exam results (34 percent of seniors took at least one AP exam, 64 percent of whom scored a three or greater).
