U-46 Board recognizes South Elgin journalist

By Seth Hancock
At its meeting on Monday, May 16, the Board of Education in School District U-46 recognized South Elgin junior Anna Lee Ackermann for taking home the top spot in broadcast news at the state journalism competition.
Ackermann, who competed at state in April at Eastern Illinois University, explained what she was tasked to do.
“We had to record a press conference, and it was about how [EIU] recently hosted Special Olympics,” Ackermann said. “I had to create a minute and 15-second radio segment around that using quotes.”
In the future, Ackermann said she would like to get into documentary filmmaking. She finished second in broadcast news at the DeKalb Sectional at Northern Illinois University.
Ackermann is the editor-in-chief for South Elgin’s school newspaper The Doppler, whose faculty advisor is Kari Botkin.
“Anna Lee has been a wonderful addition to The Doppler staff since she joined her sophomore year,” Botkin said in a U-46 press release. “As a junior, she now excels in news writing and can cover all angles of a story via extensive interviews and quotes. Anna Lee also has a phenomenal work ethic which makes her a great asset to our staff.”
South Elgin’s journalism team had plenty of successes including winning the team title at sectionals and placed fourth at state. Junior Brian Nguyen was second in double-page spread and fifth in newspaper design at state, and the sophomore duo of Alex August and Amaya Jungers were fourth in yearbook theme development.
August and Jungers won in the same category at sectionals as did senior Kayla Brown in yearbook copy editing. Nguyen, Anali Perez, Caitlin Edgerton, Haley Follman, Juan Castillo, Natalie Graham, Rachel Covert, Kaushal Dholakia, Liam O’Connor and Sarah Pajak all contributed to the sectional success.
