Smodilla withdraws from U-46 board race

By Seth Hancock
The race for three open Board of Education seats in School District U-46 in the April 4 election is down to five candidates after Tracy Smodilla announced she had withdrawn her name from the ballot.
In a press release from Smodilla’s campaign, she withdrew on Thursday, Jan. 26 and cited family reasons for the decision.
“It is my intention to remain locally engaged, continuing my service on the Bartlett Economic Development Commission and on the U-46 Citizens’ Advisory Council,” Smodilla said via the release. “However, I just cannot devote the level of commitment required to be the mindful, deliberate U-46 board member that the public requires without sacrificing the time and resources that my family needs and deserves at this time.”
Smodilla recently was the Republican candidate for a State Senate seat in the 22nd District. She lost her race against Cristina Castro this past November.
“I’m extremely grateful for the confident support, trust and encouragement extended to me by so many neighboring friends, area leadership and organizations in our collective quest to strengthen our communities through civic and social advocacy,” Smodilla said. “But I’m especially appreciative of the many volunteers who again worked selflessly to put me on the ballot.”
There are three incumbents on the ballot including Cody Holt, Veronica Noland and Donna Smith. The two challengers remaining in the U-46 race include Enoch Essendrop and Melissa Owens.
