The Examiner U-46 News FeedKenyon Woods student improving after beating By Seth Hancock
The condition of Kenyon Woods Middle School student Henry Sembdner appears to be improving after he was sent to the intensive care unit of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge after being allegedly assaulted by another student on Friday, Feb. 3.
In a message sent out to School District U-46 families from CEO Tony Sanders on Monday, Feb. 6, as of Sunday Sembdner is “breathing on his own, talking and eating.”
The alleged assault occurred at the South Elgin middle school around noon on Friday according to Sanders’ message, and it “took place in a matter of seconds when one male KWMS student assaulted another male student. Initial reports indicate there was no history of bullying between these two students.”
The message added that “reports also indicate that staff was present in the hallway and responded quickly to secure the scene and help the injured student.”
The Board of Education had a meeting on Monday night and Sanders touched on the incident during an update on the district’s safety and security.
“We’ve made great strides towards providing a safe culture for all students,” Sanders said. “You can see it in the investments that the board has made. You can see it in the responsiveness of our staff…. That said, sometimes bad things happen like what happened last week at Kenyon Woods.”
Eric Loera, the board’s student advisor, said that students across the district are showing support for Sembdner by wearing green on Monday, baseball stuff on Tuesday, either Batman or Superman stuff on Wednesday, grey or red on Thursday and blue on Friday.
“It’s really great to see how students are coming together to show support for this student. It’s beautiful to see,” Loera said.
Sembdner is a Chicago Cubs fan and Loera said regarding baseball on Tuesday to make it “preferably Cubs. Great choice of teams.”
Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo heard about the incident and tweeted: “Heard you are a big @Cubs fan Henry. When you are better I have a couple tickets and BP passes waiting for you at Wrigley. #StayStrong.”
A Go Fund Me page titled “Help for Henry Sembdner” was setup to help the family pay the medical costs.
