The Examiner U-46 News FeedSeveral U-46 teachers earn, renew certification By Seth Hancock
School District U-46 recently announced that eight teachers have earned their National Board Certification, and three more have renewed the credential.
According to a press release, “only 33 percent of candidates pass on the first attempt” and there are currently over 100 teachers in U-46 with the certification.
Among the eight newly certified teachers are Meagen Balzer and Nicole Fernstrom of Streamwood High School, Christine Bowen and Amanda Patano of South Elgin High School, district instructional coach Sandra Citron, Eric Hill of Larkin High School in Elgin, Brooke McGrath of Clinton Elementary School in South Elgin and Karen Witt of Horizon Elementary School in Hanover Park.
Renewing their certification were Maryellyn Friel of Heritage Elementary School in Streamwood, Nicholas Vassolo of Streamwood High School and Naushina Rahman of Elgin High School.
According to the press release: “Candidates must demonstrate their understanding of content knowledge in their chosen certificate area; design and implement instruction to advance student learning and achievement; describe, analyze and reflect on their teaching and interactions with students; and highlight their abilities as an effective and reflective practitioner in developing and applying their knowledge of their students.”
The Board of Education recognized the teachers at its meeting on Monday, Feb. 26.
Citron described the three-year process which “involves roughly 35 hours of professional development each year” which includes “planning, teaching, reflecting and applying that over and over and over again to get our videos right, to get our writing the way we wanted it, we had people reading for us. It was a very long process and so worth it.”
Friel thanked the board for providing the resources for teachers to obtain the certification, and “it’s really a small percentage of teachers who have gone through the process and that have achieved the process.”
