U-46 student musicians honored at meeting

By Seth Hancock
A group of high school musicians in School District U-46 were honored by the Board of Education at its meeting on Monday, April 9.
A total of five students, two from South Elgin High School and three from Elgin’s Larkin High School, earned all-state honors by the Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA) and performed at the ILMEA’s conference in Peoria in January.
“We are fortunate to have so many talented musicians in U-46,” Jaimie Giraldo, coordinator of fine arts, said in a district press release. “Their success speaks not only to their personal talents, hard work, and dedication, but also to the many dedicated music teachers who have provided our students with a firm musical foundation to be lifelong patrons of the arts.”
David Larsen, a tenor 1 from South Elgin who made the all-state choir, described the process of making state at the board meeting which started at the ILMEA’s District 9 competition where “like 300 people in the hallway singing at the top of their lungs” preparing to audition.
Larsen said he was given sheet music earlier in the year for several songs and was not told what song would be used in the audition until the day before the competition, and he said several of his classmates were selected for the district choir.
“There are a lot of other people who made it to District 9 in our school… which I think they are all incredible musicians, but Hannah (Kim) and I were lucky enough to be chosen to go to the all-state level” where “some of the best musicians that I’ve ever heard in my entire life” performed, Larsen said.
Kim, for the all-state band on flute, said she was initially one slot away from state but went as a replacement, but at state she made the honors band on a second audition.
The three musicians from Larkin included Chloe Robbins (orchestra, bassoon), Zach Wilder (honors band, clarinet) and Jackson Teetor (orchestra, trumpet).
