U-46 proclamation lauds transportation staff

By Seth Hancock
Last week was National School Bus Safety Week and the Board of Education in School District U-46 recognized the week with a proclamation of appreciation for the district’s transportation staff at its meeting on Monday, Oct. 15.
In a U-46 press release, it stated that its staff included around 300 bus drivers and ranks in the top 5 percent in terms of size for government school transportation departments in the nation. It also stated that about 4.5 million miles are driven annually in the district.
“The U-46 Transportation Department safely transports nearly 26,000 children to and from 58 schools each day,” said Mary Fergus, director of school and community relations. “U-46 drivers make nearly 1,500 daily bus stops and drive more than 26,000 miles daily. That’s more than four million miles per year.”
Jeffrey Prowell, director of transportation, said: “It’s a privilege to work with such fine people every day. The task that we accomplish on a daily basis is truly amazing, and we appreciate the recognition.”
According to the National Association for Pupil Transportation, the week is recognized on the third full week of October each year, this year from Oct. 22 to Oct. 26.
The board’s proclamation stated that “the contributions of these talented and dedicated drivers, assistants, mechanics and office staff are recognized in honor of National School Bus Safety Week…. The U-46 transportation staff not only lends their special skills and talents to the efficient operation of the school system, they also have played a significant role in the district’s quest for continuous improvement.”
The district’s press release encouraged the public to remember safety rules when driving near a school bus and to pay close attention when near a bus stop where it states a child is most in danger.
