The Examiner U-46 News FeedBartlett students, church recognized by Dist. U-46 By Seth Hancock
A group of Bartlett High School students and members of a Bartlett church have been recognized for their volunteer work in School District U-46.
Three years ago Bartlett students Harsh Chheda, Aayush Patel, Rushi Patel, Rohan Shah and Sareena Shah started a group called Mentors of Tomorrow according to a U-46 press release. The students helped students with homework and organized activities at two district schools.
Since that first year, the group has grown to about 30 mentors which has helped between 80 to 100 students according to the district, and they now help at three schools: Bartlett’s Eastview Middle School and Sycamore Trails Elementary School as well as Carol Stream’s Spring Trail Elementary School.
“Rohan, Rushi, Harsh, Aayush and Sareena have not only started a program that impacts students in several schools but they have created a blueprint for their peers to extend this initiative throughout the District,” U-46 CEO Tony Sanders stated in the press release. “We know that students can play a major role in inspiring their peers toward academic success.”
Poplar Creek Church members Carmein Blasucci, Janet Knupp and Harriet Kunesh have been volunteering at Hanover Park’s Ontarioville Elementary School.
According to the release, the women “have worked tirelessly on Thanksgiving food drives for at-risk families, organized a Christmas Mart to support in-need school families, donated playground equipment and presented gift cards to dedicated teachers. They have participated in Ontarioville Elementary’s annual supplies drop-off event, helped distribute food and snacks to student, and gathered and distributed homegrown vegetables to Ontarioville families.”
“In addition, Knupp has mentored a group of boys in a one-on-one setting, while Blasucci and Kunesh have worked together mentoring a group of sixth-grade girls through a local Girl Scout troop,” the release added.
The Bartlett students were recently recognized as the volunteers of the year and the church members received the helping hands award by the district at a volunteer reception.
