A group of students in School District U-46 were recognized for their accomplishments at various state events from last month at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, May 20.
South Elgin senior Sarah Richardson was recognized for winning the broadcast news category by producing an audio news clip under a deadline at the state journalism competition at Heartland Community College in Pontiac.
The Storm finished 11th as a team at state which included senior Samantha Prus and junior Derryl Barnes Jr. teaming up to finish fourth in the video news category and junior Mia Ackermann taking fifth in newspaper design.
“I’m so excited that our publication classes were able to collaborate with Beacon Academy to pull together a very strong journalism team for the IHSA sectionals and state competition,” said Kari Botkin, one of the team’s coaches, for a district press release. “Sarah performed very well, under deadline, at both sectionals and state.”
Five high school seniors, three from South Elgin and two from Streamwood, were recognized for first place finishes at the state manufacturing competition with Skills USA. The students will travel to Louisville, Kentucky next month for the national competition.
South Elgin’s Hailey Harden won CNC Turning, Brian Kulpa won CNC Technician and Dylan Loerwald won CNC Milling. Streamwood’s first place finishers were Jacob Pierce and Andrew Pfeifer in Additive Manufacturing.
“I am very proud and impressed with each student’s commitment to honing their precision manufacturing skills to become college and career ready,” said South Elgin’s manufacturing teacher Russ Bartz for the press release. “Their achievements are tangible proof that our precision manufacturing program sets up students for success.”
Zach Meyer and Michael Solomon from South Elgin and Angel Acosta, Juan Ayala, Aditya Patel and Christopher Piotrowski from Streamwood all placed at the competition in various events.
Six middle school students were honored for first place finishes at the state’s Science Olympiad. Jazib Ahmed and Patricia Savioa-Cooley from Bartlett’s Eastview won in the roller coaster event, and from Elgin’s Abbott two sets of students earned top honors with Nolan Chansophy and Joshua Dinh in disease detective and Jesse Dinh and Kate Gillespie in water quality.
“I am so proud of our Science Olympiad teams and grateful for the dedication of each team’s coaches, students and parents,” Deb McMullen, the district’s science coordinator, said for the release. “Science Olympiad provides students with valuable STEM experience that allows them to explore their interests and prepares them for a career in STEM.”
