Consent agenda used to ratify varied U-46 items

By Seth Hancock
The Board of Education in School District U-46 unanimously approved $7.4 million in expenditure items as well as two curriculum proposals with a projected cost over $3 million at its meeting on Monday, May 20.
Without discussion or debate, the board voted 6-0 for the expenditure items all under the consent agenda as well as for the two curriculum proposals and $8.3 million in itemized bills as separate items under discussion/action. Board member John Devereux was absent.
The largest expenditure approved was $4.1 million with Midwest Transit Equipment, Inc., to come out of the transportation fund, to purchase 48 buses.
According to the proposal, the bus purchases align with the district’s age and obsolescence plan.
“The buses are being purchased to replace buses that have met the requirement for replacement as outlined in the 2019 Age and Obsolescence Plan. These buses will replace buses that are being traded in. This purchase, with trade-ins, will reduce the fleet from 351 buses to 350 buses…. The district will be current with the Age and Obsolescence Plan if this current proposal is approved by the Board,” the proposal states.
Two items from the food and nutrition fund were approved including $1.2 million with Prairie Farms, Rockford for milk and $1 million with Alpha Baking Company, Inc. for fresh bread.
Three proposals from the operations and maintenance fund were approved including $212,000 with Kandu Construction Inc. for replacement of bathroom partitions at three schools, $185,046 with Twin Supplies, Ltd. for lighting upgrades to LED at 11 schools and $91,775 with CertaPro Painters of the North Shore for painting Streamwood High School.
An approved expenditure of $146,426 with CDW-G, from the education fund, will go towards renewal of Microsoft licenses.
The nation’s taxpayers will pay for three approved expenditure items through grant funds including $144,000 with Northern Illinois University for professional development for the English Language Learner and English as a Second Language staff, $112,500 with Golden Apple for professional learning community professional development and $76,590 with Roosevelt University for the Dual Language Teacher Leadership program.
The approved curriculum items included a K-6 literacy proposal to “integrate literacy, content area and social emotional standards,” according to the proposal, as well as a Honors Spanish Language Arts II course proposal.
The literacy proposal estimates a cost of $2.6 million for additional resources (Houghton Mifflin’s “Kids Discover,” Pearson’s “myWorld Interactive,” McGraw Hill’s “Discovering Our Past”) as well as $331,177 for Second Step resources. The Spanish course is expected to cost $103,086 for resources.
