U-46 students honored for recent achievements

By Seth Hancock
A group of elementary and secondary students from School District U-46 have had recent achievements.
Included were members of the district’s HOSA, or future health professionals, team from Bartlett, South Elgin and Streamwood high schools as well as students from Streamwood’s Glenbrook Elementary and Elgin’s Larsen middle schools who competed at the Future Problem Solvers International Bowl.
This month, HOSA team members traveled to Orlando, Florida to compete in an international competition in events like community emergency response team, health career display, original medical innovation, health education, sports medicine, medical reading, knowledge test: transcultural healthcare, prepared speaking, extemporaneous writing and community awareness.
In March, the students finished in the top three of their category at a state competition to advance to the international event. The district’s HOSA team is coached by high school teachers Patrick Doranski of South Elgin, Jackie Gordon of Streamwood and Susan Hoch and Valerie Putek of Bartlett.
“The HOSA competitions give students hands-on experience that empowers them to become leaders in the medical field at an early age,” Doranski said for a district press release. “Our students have been diligently preparing themselves to compete and we are excited to see how they perform on the international stage.”
From Bartlett students included Anuj Ghandi, Sahithi Manne, Jhil Patel and Esha Sachdev. From South Elgin they included Alissa Farmer, Eviana Giardina, Toni Herz, Kylee Hunter, Jordan Lenox, Aileen Lopez, MacKenzie Molina, Shruti Patel, Tulso Patel, Margaret Pavilk, Kaitlyn Petratos and Karolina Terlikowski. Streamwood students included Gabriella Bongiovanni, Monica Voravong, Reeya Patel and Archana Patel.
The Future Problem Solvers International Bowl was also held this month at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The students were coached by Glenbrook teacher Ellen Smith.
“It’s a unique program that teaches 21st century skills — critical and creative thinking, problem solving, and decision making,” Smith said in a release. “In the five years I’ve been coaching, I’ve seen former students continue to use skills they’ve honed as Future Problem Solvers to be successful in their educational and personal lives.”
Glenbrook students Nikita Muddada, Risha Lakkadi, Mannat Ashta and Yuvan Ganne took first place in the group problem solving event in the juniors (fourth to sixth grade) division at the state bowl in April while Nishi Sheth, Katelyn Wong, Michelle Cardozo and Svanik Yachavaram finished second in the event to advance. Larsen students Mann Sheth, Danyal Sulemanjee, Arjun Sivasankaran and Kush Patel finished first in the event in the middle (seventh to ninth grade) division.
Smith also took Larsen students Saranya Ganne and Sarayu Manne and Glenbrook students Brody Grosenbach, Aarav Patel, Sara Sulemanjee and Brandon Cardozo to Massachusetts to compete in the MAGIC team competition.
Also recently recognized by the district were Morgan McCloskey, from Bartlett’s Nature Ridge Elementary School, and Michelle Maslon from Elgin High School, who were recognized at the June 3 Board of Education meeting for accomplishments at the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics state championship.
McCloskey scored a 38.5 in the all-around to earn first place. She was also first at the regional championship. Maslon was first in the balance beam at both.
