District U-46 approves lawsuit settlement deal

By Seth Hancock
The Board of Education in School District U-46 unanimously approved of a settlement agreement with the family of Henry Sembdner who suffered a brain injury at Kenyon Woods Middle School in South Elgin after a beating by a classmate in 2017.
The approval was among several items voted on, all by 7-0 votes, at the board meeting on Monday, Oct. 21.
Sembdner’s family filed a lawsuit in 2017. No details of the settlement have been released, and there was no discussion by the board prior to the vote.
Also approved was a contract renewal with Workforce Software costing $93,960, which will be paid through the education fund. The contract covers an annual license and rental of time clocks which track employees work hours.
According to the proposal, the contract will run between Dec. 1, through Nov. 30, 2020. The contract will replace older time clocks that were purchased by the district in 2013.
Board member John Devereux noted that it was listed as contract renewal but the proposal stated there was a “new contract.”
Dale Burnidge, director of financial operations, said the new contract is for “the new time clocks, the actual hardware,” but the licensing for the Workforce software is a renewal.
Also approved was a personnel report and workers’ compensation cases as well as $10.2 million in itemized bills. The report included four workers’ compensation cases totaling $62,575, a $30,003 case to a para educator being the largest.
