American Education Week noted in U-46, nationally

  Last week, Nov. 18 through Nov. 22, was American Education Week, and the Board of Education in School District U-46 recognized teachers and support staff at its meeting on Monday, Nov. 18.
  Various union presidents attended to be recognized including Barbara Bettis (Elgin Teachers Association, Sara Moeller (District U-46 Educational Assistants) and Heather Weiss (District U-46 Transportation Union).
  “We’re all very honored to receive this tonight,” Bettis said.
  The theme for this year’s week is “Reach. Educate. Inspire.,” according to a U-46 press release.
  “Every day we all need to appreciate the hard work, talent, and dedication of our teachers and paraprofessionals,” U-46 CEO Tony Sanders said for the release. “This week, though, we set aside to ensure we appropriately celebrate these educators for how they shape future generations.”
  U.S. President Donald Trump also marked the week with a proclamation.
  “We recognize the power of education and pay tribute to the educators and role models who shape the students of today into the leaders of tomorrow,” Trump wrote. “Their efforts help provide a high-quality education to millions of students, build strong communities, and ensure that America maintains its standing in an increasingly competitive world.”
  Trump also used his proclamation to support educational freedom announcing his push for Education Freedom Scholarships which would allow private donations to state-based scholarships to receive tax credits, up to $5 billion yearly.
  “Every child in America deserves equal access to an education that meets their individual needs and prepares them for success,” Trump wrote. “In America, the responsibility for education policy decisions is reserved mainly to the States and to the local officials who know their students best, and we recognize the countless teachers and administrators who contribute every day to innovative solutions at the State and local level.”
  Trump added: “Our education system should inspire students to become lifelong learners, and it should preserve the rights of parents to play an active role in educating their children, facilitate dynamic teaching styles that fit individual students, and free students to pursue their passions.”
