The Examiner U-46 News FeedBartlett senior named Youth Leader of the Year By Seth Hancock
Melanie Salazar, a Bartlett High School senior, has been named the Youth Leader of the Year by the Township Officials of Illinois.
Salazar received the award last month when she attended the Township Officials of Illinois’ annual conference, and she was recognized by the Board of Education in School District U-46 at its meeting on Monday, Dec. 16.
The recognition was awarded to Salazar after six years of volunteering with the youth development programs in Hanover Park. She said she met her mentor Ryan Dickinson, Hanover Township’s prevention services manager, at an open gym while she was in elementary school and later was a part of middle school leadership programs.
Salazar said one of the events she volunteered for was operation snowball which Hanover Township’s website called a “day of motivational presentations, fun activities, excitement and small group discussions geared towards empowering your child to make healthy life-style decisions and have a positive impact on their peers.”
“Becoming a leader is my proudest accomplishment,” Salazar said for a U-46 press release. “I have learned to overcome my fear of public speaking. Becoming a leader has taught me how to be confident.”
Also recognized at the Dec. 16 meeting was Elgin High School senior Ana Pascual-De La Trinidad for winning first place at the Terri Hemmert High School Student Radio Competition in the On-Air Radio Show category. She interviewed Elgin speech team members for her winning piece.
“Being in radio club has taught me that even in the fast-paced technological world we live in, there are ways of communication that truly do stand the test of time, and that it’s important to keep them alive,” Pascual-De La Trinidad said for the district release. “Radio club at EHS has shown me that I have a voice and more importantly, I can give a voice to others who feel as if they don’t have one.”
