The Examiner U-46 News FeedDistrict U-46 recognizes cheer team, social workers By Seth Hancock
The Board of Education in School District U-46 recognized the South Elgin cheerleading squad for its state title as well as the district’s social workers for National School Social Work Week at its meeting on Monday, March 2.
Last month, the Storm cheer team took home the coed division title at state after competing at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
“The students are on cloud nine,” South Elgin coach Savannah Bennett said for a district press release. “After how hard the students have worked, this is just the icing on the cake.”
Upperclassmen on the team recognized at the meeting were seniors Mercedes Alejandre, Tristan Cruz, Abigail Greco, Shannon Martin, TJ Ramos and Alexandra Spires as well as juniors Jovanina Anesi, Samantha Carlson, Andrea Domin, Nicholas Domschke, Olivia Herak, Mya Lyons and Karly Mastrangeli.
Underclassmen included sophomores Samantha Jimenez, Krista Martin, Kaitlyn Ramos, Mark Rundio, Alexis Salazar, Alexandrea Wrobel and Kendall York along with freshmen Avery Jagers, Morgan Poole, Lillian Seifrid and Sydney Woertendyke.
The social workers week is recognized by the School Social Work Association of America and ran between March 1 and March 7. U-46 estimated having 90 social workers.
“I just want to say what an honor it is to be recognized,” said Mary Abbott, lead social worker, at the meeting. “I’ve been in the district 23 years as a school social worker, and this is the first time we have been officially recognized by the Board of Education.”
Abbott added: “We do work behind the scenes. Every one of these social workers that are up here tonight as well as the ones who aren’t here… do amazing work every single day. They are my superheroes and they rise to the occasion to every crisis that occurs, and I am extremely proud to be leading their work and to be a part of the team.”
