Woodridge Man Sentenced to Nine Years for Defrauding Homeowners

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today that David Briggs, 30 (d.o.b. 1/28/1985) of 6730 Lakeview Court, Woodridge, has entered a plea of guilty to stealing more than $135,000 from former clients and a business associate. Briggs appeared in court this morning where he entered a plea of guilty to one count of Financial Institution Fraud and one count of Theft by Deception, both Class 2 Felonies. Briggs entered his plea in front of Judge Robert Miller, who sentenced Briggs to nine years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

On December 17, 2014, Briggs, who owned and operated a home remodeling company, met with one of his victims where he received a down payment of $17,000 to remodel the man’s kitchen and install siding on the house. Briggs had quoted the man, who was 79 years-old at the time, a price of $31,495 for the entire job. In the next several days, Briggs convinced the man to give him more money, eventually totaling more than $115,000. Briggs however, never performed any work at the man’s home and never returned any of the money given to him. Briggs also swindled another former client out of more than $30,000 in a similar fashion. In addition, Briggs also failed to pay a business associate nearly $14,000 for graphics and logo work he provided to Briggs.

“Mr. Briggs’ greed knows no boundaries,” Berlin said. “Whether stealing more than $115,000 from an elderly gentleman or refusing to pay $14,000 for services provided to him, Mr. Briggs is only concerned about himself. His inability to control his greed however, has caught up with him and he will now spend a significant amount of time behind bars for his actions. I would like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Diane Michalak for her efforts in holding Mr. Briggs responsible for his deplorable behavior and for her continued efforts in combating white collar crime.”

Briggs will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole. He was also ordered to pay full restitution to his victims.
