Cons and Consequences - 12/15

By Rich Trzupek
Jussie Smollett is not the problem friends. He’s a symptom. He’s actually a victim, though not in the way he wishes us to believe. He’s a victim of toxic atmosphere created by the progressive wing of the Democrat party and their brain-dead allies in the mainstream media.
I suspect Smollett is essentially a child emotionally. His stubborn insistence that he did nothing wrong and didn’t lie is analogous to the conversation that practically every parent has had with a child who has quite obviously done something wrong, but who stubbornly refuses to admit it. Generically, that conversation goes something like this:
Parent: “Hey, what happened to the lamp? Why is it in pieces on the floor?”
  Kid: “I don’t know.”
“But you were the only one home and the lamp was intact when we left for dinner two hours ago.”
“The dog must have done it.”
“The dog is at the vet.”
“Maybe there was an earthquake. I don’t know.”
“Hey, we just looked at our security cam footage and it shows you dancing crazily around the room, bumping into the lamp and knocking it over.”
  “No it doesn’t.”
  “Yes, it clearly does.”
“Why do you hate me so much!? Why can’t you ever believe me?
  Etc.
That’s basically the sort of narrative Smollett has presented and apparently is the kind of story he is determined to stick with. One suspects that Smollett was taken in by the progressive wing of the Democrats that preaches that anyone who doesn’t agree with them is wholly blinded by racial bias and sexual orientation prejudice.
From his point of view, inside that childish mind, there was likely no difference between staging a crime that’s about race and sexual orientation and actually being the victim of an actual crime based on those motivations. In the weird logic of the victim culture that progressive Dems embrace, the distinction between potential victims and actual victims is minimal. In a world where “micro aggressions” supposedly exist, anybody and everybody can be righteously aggrieved.
Shall we recall a few cringe-worthy reactions to the Smollett story among the MSM and Dems, when it first broke? We shall:
Joe Biden, and/or his handlers and/or Brandon: “What happened today to Jussie Smollett must never be tolerated in this country. We must stand up and demand that we no longer give this hate safe harbor; that homophobia and racism have no place on our streets or in our hearts. We are with you, Jussie."
Kamela Harris: “This was an attempted modern day lynching. (Giggle.) No one should have to fear for their life because of their sexuality or color of their skin. (Chuckle.) We must confront this hate. (Uncontrollable giggling.)”
Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez: “This attack was not “possibly” racist. It was a racist and homophobic attack.”
Bernie Sanders: “The racist and homophobic attack on Jussie Smollett is a horrific instance of the surging hostility toward minorities around the country.”
The New York Times: “Jussie Smollett, one of the stars of the television show ‘Empire,’ was attacked in Chicago by 2 assailants who yelled racial and homophobic slurs. The incident is being investigated as ‘a possible hate crime,’ according to the police.”
Of all of those comments, the last is the most depressing. The supposed “newspaper of record” reports that alleged attack as a fact (he “was attacked” according to the NYT) and demeans the possibility that it might all be a hoax by deploying air quotes around the phrase “a possible hate crime.” The Grey Lady had no interest in delivering unbiased news. They pushed a narrative, which is basically all she does these days.
So if you’re a progressive Dem or part of the corrupt MSM, how do you walk this back? You’ve got an adult child so delusional and self-centered that he wrote a personal check to his supposed attackers; who didn’t hire “attackers” of a race different than his own while simultaneously saying that racism motivated his supposed attackers; who is on tape pretty obviously rehearsing the whole incident the night before it happened; who thought it was important to leave the noose around his neck when he reported the crime, but was sartorially alert enough to tuck the rope under his collar as all fashionable lynchers do; who managed to hang on to his Subway sandwich after he was assaulted (as someone who has actually been assaulted, I can assure you that hanging on to your crap is not a priority, nor even a consideration); and that all of this happened in one of the most liberal cities in the United States at 2 a.m. in the morning on one of the coldest days of the year.
Even MSNBC, which is essentially the modern-day equivalent of the VÅ‘lkischer Beobachter for progressives (and I love the fact that progressives will have to look that reference up) figured out that there is no way they can justify their incompetence, ignorance and prejudice about the Smollett story. So, they choose to ignore it and very much hope that you will too.
