District U-46 Board set to vote on various items

By Seth Hancock
The Board of Education in School District U-46 is set to vote on $9.3 million in expenditure proposals at its upcoming meeting on Monday, April 12 after being presented on March 15.
The largest project is in interior buildout and furniture purchase at the district’s Elgin office at 1019 East Chicago St. The cost is $3.6 million for the buildout with Happ Builders and $225,374 for furniture from Warehouse Direct, to be paid for through the operations and maintenance fund if approved.
Five departments are being relocated to the site, the proposal states, and “will be afforded a unique opportunity. Instead of cramming their current operation into spaces they’ve outgrown, those teams will be able to move into spaces designed specifically to support their operation.”
With Elens and Maichin Roofing and Sheet Metal, the district is asking for $1.9 million (operations and maintenance fund) to replace the roof at the district’s Educational Service Center. The proposal states the current roof is 36 years old and “the building has frequent roof leaks that sometimes disrupt instruction within the Dream Academy and Central School Programs and displaces staff that occupy the upper floors in the administrative wing.”
Costing $1.8 million (operations and maintenance fund), U-46 is seeking improvements to Elgin High School’s Memorial Field with Northwest Contractors. The project “will address both mechanical deficiencies and damage caused by previous water infiltrations” and “code compliance issues and include the relocation and upgrade of the mechanical systems, a fire and intrusion alarm system, structural repairs, and lighting,” the proposal states.
For library relocation and wall repairs at Elgin’s Lowrie Elementary School with Bulley and Andrews, the district is seeking $701,000 (operations and maintenance fund).
A gymnasium floor restoration project at Elgin’s Larsen Middle School will cost $440,136 (operations and maintenance fund) with FH Pashen.
The district is asking for $344,000 (operations and maintenance/health life safety funds) for a boiler replacement with Independent Mechanical Industries at Elgin’s Hillcrest Elementary School, $158,600 (operations and maintenance fund) with 1 Source Mechanical for an HVAC system replacement at South Elgin’s Willard Elementary School and $72,000 (operations and maintenance fund) with Filotto Roofing for roof replacement at the Independence Center foe Early Learning in Elgin.
A contract renewal for the district’s frontline absence and substitute management software has a price tag of $37,309 (education fund).
