Playground work expands due to excess U-46 funds

By Seth Hancock
The Board of Education in School District U-46 approved of $1.1 million in expenditure items, among other items approved, at a June meeting.
The June 7 vote was 6-0, board member John Devereux was absent.
The largest item, from the operations and maintenance fund, was $629,763 to both GameTime c/o Cunningham Recreation ($500,268) and Team Reil, Inc. ($129,495) for playground replacements at nine schools, each project costing in a range of $50,100 to $113,349.
Parent organizations used to take responsibility for playgrounds at their individual schools, but the proposal states that the district has an excess of operations funds due to COVID-19.
As an alternative to giving a break to taxpayers while allowing parents to maintain some responsibility, the proposal states: “Thus, Plant Operations staff were presented with a unique opportunity to complete additional projects.”
Also, from operations and maintenance, the district will spend $28,980 with Veterans Floor, Inc. for a gym floor refinishing at Streamwood’s Canton Middle School.
Education fund items approved were two with Mindsight for renewal of the district’s phone system ($83,756) and for Fortinet Endpoint Security Management software ($66,815) as well as one each with CDW-G for Microsoft Office Suite ($144,503), with School District 301 to allow 51 students into the veterinary assistant program ($75,750) and with Lenovo for 30 creative content laptops ($49,545).
From the transportation fund, the district will spend $53,783 with Safety-Kleen for oil and maintenance fluids.
The board also unanimously approved a resolution declaring the need to continue using eight double and five single mobile units, membership in the Illinois High School Association, $16.4 million in itemized bills and a personnel report and workers’ compensation cases report which includes one new financial services position, a grants coordinator.
