U-46 discussion focuses on child values teaching

By Seth Hancock
“The schools cannot allow parents to influence the kind of values-education their children receive in school; that is what is wrong with those who say there is a universal system of values.,” said Paul Haubner, a former specialist with the National Education Association (NEA). “Our goals are incompatible with theirs. We must change their values.”
Teaching children traditional values may be “child abuse” according to School District U-46 teacher Melissa Ross, U-46’s NEA delegate, who addressed the Board of Education during public comments at its meeting on Monday, Aug. 1.
Ross came to share her “pride I feel from being part of such an inclusive and progressive organization,” the NEA, as well as to chastise board member Jeanette Ward for recognizing biological facts.
“At the June 20 board meeting, Jeanette Ward made a sad and concerning comment… With regards to an article about a first grade girl who was born a biological boy, Ms. Ward said of the parents encouraging the child to use the bathroom in which she identified with it was an explicit denial of reality and child abuse,” Ross said.
Ward had voted against the StudySync resource at the June 20 meeting, which was approved 5-2 with Cody Holt also voting no, for its “pervasive leftist views and factual inaccuracies” which included praising a California school district allowing biological boys who claim to identify as girls to play on girl’s sports teams.
Another portion of StudySync wrote that a Colorado school district had discriminated against a first grade boy who was not allowed to use the girl’s bathroom. The article said “she was born a biological boy.”
“That sentence is an implicit denial of reality,” Ward said in June. “Furthermore, to encourage a first grade boy to believe he is a girl and to treat him as such is child abuse.”
For Ross, she apparently believes otherwise as she stated: “In my house, we consider it child abuse to not teach our children that humanity is diverse and complex and there are groups of our society who have for too long not been supported and respected.”
Dr. Paul R. McHugh, the former psychiatrist-in-chief and current Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry at John Hopkins University, says that changing one’s sex is “biologically impossible” and that transgender people suffer from a mental disorder. John Hopkins Hospital was the first American institution to perform a sex reassignment surgery in 1965 but no longer offers it.
Dr. John Gearhart, director of pediatric urology at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, suggests “strongly consider counseling families to raise the children” as their biological sex.
Along with supporting the prolonging of a mental disorder, StudySync provided false statistics according to Ward. The resource claims the transgender population is between 2 to 5 percent but it’s actually only 0.3 percent.
That didn’t sit well with another public commenter who spoke at the July 18 meeting to say Ward is “probably someone who shouldn’t be speaking on behalf of the community” and that 2 to 5 percent is the fact.
Ward’s statistic comes from a 2011 study from UCLA’s Williams Institute while the 2 to 5 percent claim comes from the biased Transgender Law Center which on its website says it “works to change law, policy, and attitudes so that all people can live safely, authentically, and free from discrimination regardless of their gender identity or expression.”
A 2015 Gallup poll found that the LGBT community as a whole is at only 3.8 percent. LGBT encompasses not only transgender but gay, lesbian and bisexual as well.
Ross was proud that the NEA has adopted language to be taught to children from the Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE). The GLSEN proclaims itself as “championing LGBT issues” and the NCTE calls itself “the nation’s leading social justice advocacy organization winning life-saving change for transgender people.”
The NEA has for a long time pushed for indoctrination regarding social issues as well as proclaiming teachers qualified to give psychological therapy. In its 1969 publication Today’s Education” the NEA states: “Schools will become clinics whose purpose is to provide individualized, psycho-social treatment for the student, and teachers must become psycho-social therapists.”
In 2011, NEA spokesman Diane Schneider told a United Nation’s panel that the family and religion work against the goals of the NEA.
“Oral sex, masturbation and orgasms need to be taught in education,” Schneider said. “The only way to combat heterosexism and gender conformity is comprehensive sex education. Gender identity expression and sexual orientation are a spectrum and those opposed to homosexuality are stuck in a binary box that religion and family create.”
Although being directly addressed at the Aug. 1 meeting, Ward thanked those making public comments for exercising their rights to free speech and wanted to “encourage people that I for one don’t mind being addressed by name. I think as an elected official your constituents ought to be able to address you by name.”
The public comment cards previously stated that the public could not address board members by name.
Board member Phil Costello agreed with Ward saying it opens up a two-way conversation and that it helps in the process of deliberating issues.
“As long as it’s done constructively, I think that we should be talking about what each one of us represents,” Costello said.
