Variety of U-46 expenses approved at meetings

The Board of Education in School District U-46 unanimously approved of over $11 million in expenditure proposals at its two February meetings on Feb. 10 and Feb. 24.
The largest item was a $6.8 million proposal, to be paid for through the operations and maintenance fund, with Troop Contracting, Inc. for an interior buildout at an Elgin building, 1019 East Chicago St., which was recently purchased as a satellite office for the transportation department.
“This project, which is considered phase two of a multi-phase project, will replace and reinforce the roof, insulate the structure, clad the exterior, and install all new mechanical systems,” the proposal states. “It will also result in the creation of the satellite office space for the Transportation Department.”
From the operations and maintenance fund, a three-year contract with Trane Chicago costing $1.8 million was approved for preventative maintenance of the district’s heating and cooling equipment as was a $56,824 bid from Cintas, Inc. for annual fire alarm testing.
From the nation’s taxpayers through grant funds, U-46 will purchase 30 interactive boards from Dell EMC and 30 board stands from PACE Systems at a cost of $106,500.
Several proposals from the education fund were approved including two with Sentinel Information Services costing $324,539 to purchase program network switches and $368,183 for a wireless access point purchase, $262,354 with Applied Communications Group for uninterruptible power supply, $62,556 with Communications Direct, Inc. to purchase 290 two-way radios and 16 chargers for middle schools and self-contained classrooms and $56,695 with Storcom a storage area network maintenance renewal.
The remaining approvals were for operations and maintenance projects at individual schools:
Two projects at Elgin’s Larsen Middle School including $406,000 with Northwest Contractors, Inc. for the first phase of a gym renovation and $78,880 with EHC Industries, Inc. for an asbestos abatement project.
At Streamwood High School, a gym floor and bleacher replacement project will cost $246,000 with Happ Builders, Inc. and a paint removal project will cost $235,000 with Celtic Environmental Co.
At Elgin’s Larkin High School, a mobile unit housing 12 classrooms will be leased at a cost of $216,847 with Aries Building Systems, LLC to house classes displaced during a construction project, and a $45,400 asbestos abatement project with NES Environmental will also take place.
The board approved the third phase of a domestic water piping replacement project at Elgin High School costing $74,000 with Holian Asbestos Removal, and two wood floor sanding and refinishing projects with Veterans Floors, Inc. were approved costing $32,820 at Elgin’s Washington Elementary School and $28,400 at Elgin’s Lowrie Elementary School.
Also approved was a personnel report and workers’ compensation cases including one new position, a paraeducator, and $5.9 million in itemized bills at the Feb. 10 meeting and $6.6 million in itemized bills at the Feb. 24 meeting.
