U-46 Board recognizes its all-state musicians

By Seth Hancock
Nine musicians from School District U-46 were named all-state this year, and the Board of Education recognized them at its meeting on Monday, Feb. 24.
In the fall, schools competed in the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) District IX event, which includes both middle and high school students. From that event, high schoolers can be selected to perform in the all-state event in Peoria, which took place between Jan. 29 and Feb. 1, in several categories: band, choir, education symposium or orchestra.
Ethan Montgomery, a junior at Elgin’s Larkin High School, was chosen as first chair for clarinet in the all-state honors band.
Bartlett High School students included seniors Tommy Arms (future music educators symposium) and Ryan Blake (all-state honors band, euphonium) as well as juniors Mikayla Chin (future music educators symposium) and Gauri Yadav (all-state honors chorus), and South Elgin High School students included senior David Galanes (all-state honors orchestra, oboe) and sophomore Jacob Pangilinan (all-state chorus). Larkin had two additional honorees, senior Elianna Nielsen (all-state honors orchestra, viola) and junior Miguel Rodriguez (all-state honors band, flute).
“Our dedicated music teachers offer students a strong musical education in U-46,” Jaimie Giraldo, coordinator of fine arts, said in a district press release. “Opportunities like the ILMEA allow students to perform and practice their artistry surrounded by gifted musicians from across the state.”
Additionally, several other U-46 students were selected to perform in the District IX concert. From schools within The Examiner readership area:
Bartlett High School: Chloe Fox (choir), Kara Fox (choir), Daniel Hernandez (choir), Nick Raymundo (choir), Ziona Tharakan (choir), Thomas Arms (band) and Lawrence Yap (choir).
South Elgin High School: Alexandra Wesner (choir), Chanel Antoshin (orchestra) and Caden Grogan (band).
Streamwood High School: Joshua Lindahl (choir) and Zoe Becker (band).
Middle school students included James Chung (Streamwood’s Canton, orchestra), Aanya Navsariwala (Bartlett’s Eastview, orchestra), Maison Preuss (Eastview, orchestra), Victoria Nalepka (Eastview, orchestra), Victoria Vo (South Elgin’s Kenyon Woods, orchestra), Emma Greenberg (Kenyon Woods, band) and Kiera Moore (Streamwood’s Tefft, band).
