Addison Man Pleads Guilty to Murdering His Wife
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced today that Kurtis Worley, 35 (d.o.b. 3/09/1980) of 915 N. Craig Place, Addison, has entered a blind plea of guilty to First Degree Murder in the 2013 stabbing death of his wife, Martha. Worley entered his plea this morning in front of Judge Liam Brennan.
On July 26, 2013, at approximately 3 a.m., Addison police officers responded to a 911 domestic disturbance call at the couple’s home. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Martha Worley in the bedroom lying face up on the bed. She had been beaten about the head and face and sustained significant wounds to her head. Police also found her husband, Kurtis Worley, lying on the floor of the bedroom. He had sustained cuts to his wrists and neck, later determined to be self-inflicted. Martha Worley was transported to Loyola where she passed away due to her injuries at approximately 5 p.m. that evening. Kurtis Worley was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He has since recovered from his injuries and has been in custody since that time. An investigation into the murder revealed that in the early morning hours of July 26, Worley, armed with two knives, attacked Martha as she slept in the couple’s bedroom. Worley stabbed his wife multiple times in the head and face as she was lying on the bed. Worley also stabbed one of the couple’s step sons in the neck as he entered the bedroom after hearing his mother’s cries for help. The couple’s son survived the attack.
“This morning, Kurtis Worley took responsibility for the murder of his wife and brutal attack of his step son,” Berlin said. “This has been a very disturbing case for all those involved. My thoughts and prayers go out to Martha’s surviving family and friends. Her tragic death has been a jolt to those who knew her and it is my sincerest hope that today’s proceedings will in some way help them move on from this horrible chapter in their lives. I would like to thank the Addison Police Department for their outstanding work on this very disturbing case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Nancy Donahoe, Louisa Nuckolls and Fred Flather for their exceptional work in holding Mr. Worley responsible for the murder of his wife, Martha.”
In all, Worley entered a plea of guilty to two counts of First Degree Murder and one count of Attempt First Degree Murder. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 25, 2016, for return of the pre-sentence report.
