Calendar, policy updates set for District U-46 vote

By Seth Hancock
The Board of Education in School District U-46 is set to vote on policy updates as well as an amendment to the 2023-2024 school year at its upcoming meeting on Monday, Feb. 26.
The items were presented at the Feb. 5 meeting.
The calendar amendment is due to the emergency days used this winter, said Superintendent Suzanne Johnson.
“May 3rd was originally scheduled to be a non-attendance day for students, or a school improvement planning day for staff, which would have meant that May 31st would have been the last student attendance day,” Johnson said. “Our recommendation instead is that May 3rd now become a student attendance day and May 31st become the non-student attendance day and we make that a school improvement planning day which would mean the last day of school for students would be May 30th.”
There are 26 policy updates to be voted on. The updates were not posted publicly on the board’s agenda.
Sue Kerr, the board’s president, said the board had a “detailed discussion” during a policy committee meeting.
“There are a couple of these we need to make a decision on language when we vote next time,” Kerr said.
The policies to be updated from Section 2 (board policies): 2:20 (powers and duties of the school board), 2:110 (qualifications, terms and duties of board officers), 2:200 (types of board meetings) and 2:220 (board meeting procedure).
  From Section 4 (operational services): 4:10 (fiscal/business management), 4:30 (revenue/investments), 4:60 (purchases/contracts), 4:130 (free and reduced-price food), 4:150 (facility management/building programs) and 4:160 (environmental quality of buildings and grounds).
From Section 5 (personnel): 5:30 (hiring process), 5:210 (resignations), 5:220 (substitute teachers), 5:250 (leaves of absence) and 5:330 (sick days, vacations, holidays, leaves).
From Section 6 (instruction): 6:50 (school wellness), 6:60 (curriculum content) and 6:230 (library media program).
From Section 7 (students): 7:60 (residence), 7:70 (attendance/truancy), 7:140 (search and seizure), 7:160 (student appearance), 7:190 (student behavior), 7:270 (administering medicines) and 7:290 (suicide and depression awareness and prevention).
From Section 8 (community relations): 8:30 (visitors to and conduct on school property).
