Series of expense items approved by U-46 board

By Seth Hancock
The Board of Education in School District U-46 unanimously approved $1.7 million in expenditure items at its Monday, Sept. 12 meeting. The vote was 5-0, board members Sue Kerr and Eva Porter were absent.
The largest item was for contract renewals for school resource officers at secondary schools from Elgin (seven officers, $545,662 total), Streamwood (three officers, $225,894), South Elgin (two officers, $182,464) and Bartlett (two officers, $143,864).
The total cost will increase 8.3 percent to $1.1 million, paid for from the education fund.
“School Resource Officers will continue to be a valuable resource to administration, teachers, students, and parents,” the proposal stated. “School Resource Officers will mentor and make positive relationships with students that will build trust and an understanding between one another. School Resource Officers will ensure that school buildings are a safe and welcoming environment for school district employees, students, parents, and visitors.”
Costing $218,645 from the operations and maintenance fund, the district will purchase a Morbark Tub Grinder from Alexander Equipment to replace one that’s reached the end of its life cycle, the proposal states which added the item is “used to convert yard and wood waste into mulch for use in landscaping and playgrounds.”
The board approved a $195,000 (education fund) three-year contract with Hudl for livestreaming and online storage of high school athletic games and practices. Historically, the district said athletic programs used private donations to purchase the service, but now taxpayer funding will be used.
Costing $181,725, through federal grant funds, the board approved a contract renewal with Gorbold Behavioral Consulting for consultation related to autism.
Also approved by a 5-0 vote was $11.9 million in itemized bills.
